Brno - The Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) is completing the construction of a new theater building in the center of Brno. The modern-equipped Theater on Orlí will primarily serve students of opera and musical theater who are studying at the Brno academy. The total costs for the construction and equipment will exceed 343 million crowns, JAMU spokesperson Luboš Mareček stated today to ČTK. The school plans a ceremonial opening at the end of October.
The building has risen in a 20-meter-wide gap on Orlí Street, which was created during bombing in World War II, and until recently, it was filled with a temporary structure from the 1950s. The most important part of the building is located in the inner courtyard. It houses a hall for 150 people with a stage, orchestra pit, fly system, and control booth. In the basement, there is a recording studio and rehearsal rooms for students.
The Theater on Orlí represents the largest development project of JAMU in recent years. According to the school's representatives, its significance lies mainly in the quality of the equipment. "It will allow students to work with the most modern theater, sound, and lighting technologies and thus enter into practice," said rector Ivo Medek.
The school for the theater will purchase new musical instruments for 24 million crowns. "We will acquire, for example, two harps of top concert quality. It is an excellent investment in quality also because, in the long term, the Faculty of Music at JAMU is considering accreditation for teaching this instrument," said the theater's operational director Lenka Tesáčková.
The modernly designed street facade of the theater will be enlivened by graphics with musical motifs. The rear part of the theater complex will gradually be covered by climbing greenery. There will be a café in the theater and a wine cellar in the preserved baroque cellars. Residents protested against the construction for a long time, particularly the minority group that has their monastery nearby; as a result, the project was partially changed.
