Svitavy – The comprehensive modernization of Svitavy Hospital will begin on July 1 with the takeover of the construction site. The construction, costing 1.367 billion crowns including VAT, is the second largest regional investment in healthcare. The modernization of the complex is expected to be completed in 2030, the Pardubice Region stated in a press release.
The entire project is complex not only financially but also in terms of construction. The hospital's operations must be maintained during the construction, which is why the modernization is divided into several phases. First, the economic building will be transformed into a pathology facility, including technical support, and the original building of the emergency medical service will be demolished. This will be followed by the renovation of Pavilion A, which houses operating rooms and intensive care units, among others. Then the construction of the new Pavilion C will begin. Finally, a new pavilion for the children's department, internal medicine, and surgery will be built.
The construction work is divided into three phases spread over 49 months and includes breaks for the commissioning of new facilities and the relocation of hospital operations. "We are facing several years in which it will be necessary to reconcile extensive construction activities with the daily operations of the hospital. It is not only about the construction itself but also about a number of relocations of workplaces, changes in the organization of operations, and adapting to new conditions," said Pavel Kunčák, director of Svitavy Hospital.
The project also includes ancillary structures, such as roads, sidewalks, and reinforced surfaces. It will also be necessary to relocate the heating pipeline, build retention and absorption facilities, a distribution station, site lighting, and ensure landscape adjustments.
The final price that emerged from the competition is 1.367 billion crowns. For financing, the Pardubice Region plans a partial subsidy of approximately 100 million crowns from European funds for the part of the project concerning the construction of the emergency reception. Most of the costs will likely be covered by the regional budget.
The only investment more expensive than the modernization of Svitavy Hospital was the construction of the emergency fields pavilion and the central reception at Pardubice Hospital, which cost nearly two billion crowns. A similar project at Orlickoústecká Hospital cost 485 million crowns.
