Kolín - In Kolín, the demolition of the dilapidated former military administration building in the city center at Republic Square began today. The owner is the company BM Rent, and a building with spaces for commercial use, offices, and apartments is to be constructed on the site. The demolition, with a break from mid-December to January, is scheduled to be completed by the end of March next year, the city informed today on Facebook.
"The investor intends to build a completely new multifunctional building, where there will be commercial spaces on the ground floor, offices and apartments on the upper floors, and garages in two underground levels. It has an issued zoning decision and a demolition permit for the existing buildings," the city stated. According to the city hall's statements, the project has been modified several times to meet the city's requirements. "The function, use, height, and built area of the new building are in accordance with Kolín's zoning plan and the Regulatory Plan of the city heritage reserve," the city added.
The foundations of the complex consist of a school building from 1886, which later served as a city library. In the 1930s, it was taken over by the army. During the war, it housed the Oberlandrat, which was the higher provincial council, and the Gestapo; in 1945, the building returned to the army, which declared it surplus property in 2005 and sold it to BM Rent in 2009. The originally planned reconstruction of the complex was abandoned, and in 2021, the company obtained consent for demolition.
