Ivar Otruba

A unique book has just been released, presenting Professor Ivar Otruba (1933–2022) as an extraordinary landscape architect and artist of international significance. Otruba was a personality significantly associated with free creation and personal moral appeal. He referred to the cemetery as "the garden of final existence" and the path as "the first architectural expression of man".

The foundation of the monograph consists of materials that Otruba prepared back in 2010 for a planned publication that, however, was never released. The book guides us through the world of Otruba's projects, organized into thematic chapters: Parks, Spas, Cemeteries, Landscape, Botanical Gardens, Historical Objects, Gardens, and Exhibitions. Each begins with a concise motto that summarizes Otruba's approach to architectural creation. The publication is bilingual (in Czech and English), with a length of 232 pages and a number of illustrations. It offers the public previously unknown archival materials, original drawings, models, sketches, and contemporary photographs of his realizations.

The book was published by the Ivar Otruba Foundation in cooperation with the Kant publishing house. The foundation cares for the legacy of architect Ivar Otruba and its key mission is a holistic understanding of landscape architecture. The Ivar Otruba Foundation was established by Ivar Otruba's family with the support of former Otruba students, now practicing architects from the Initiating Group "landscape architecture," and other friends and colleagues.

You can purchase the book at bookstores or directly from the Ivar Otruba Foundation.

The publication was created with the support of the Czech Architecture Foundation, the Czech Chamber of Architects, the city of Veverská Bítýška, the Society for Garden and Landscape Creation, z. s., and the Flora Olomouc Exhibition Center, a. s. The book is released under the patronage of the Mayor of the Statutory City of Brno, JUDr. Markéta Vaňková.

We are planning a ceremonial presentation of the book accompanied by a debate on the evening of May 25, 2026, at the DOX Center for Contemporary Art in Prague.
