In the Czech Republic, there are already more than a thousand houses built to passive standards. Up to eighty of them can now be visited by the general public from Friday to Sunday. The 11th annual International Passive House Open Days are taking place. As part of the event, passive single-family homes, administrative and training centers, as well as several apartment buildings and one elementary art school will be open across the Czech Republic.

Does a truly passive house save tens of thousands a year on heating? How is the air quality there? How much does it cost to build a passive house? And what is so great about living in a passive house? The general public can get answers to all these questions from the most qualified sources – the owners of energy-efficient homes themselves. The event, which is supported by the Passive House Centre in the Czech Republic, is taking place this week - from Friday to Sunday, November 7 to November 9. A map of all the open passive houses, including detailed information and contact details directly to the owners, can be found here.
The cornerstone of the Passive House Open Days are the owners of passive houses and their willingness to informally chat with visitors about their experiences living in an energy-efficient home. “The event takes place worldwide and only works thanks to the willingness and enthusiasm of homeowners. This makes the event truly unique. The homeowners themselves, unlike various companies, will openly share their experiences from building and living in a passive house without any distortion,” says Iva Černá from the Passive House Centre.
During the first year, only one passive house was opened in the Czech Republic, seven in the second year, over seventy last year, and this year a total of eighty diverse passive buildings are participating. The most houses will be accessible to the public in the Central Bohemian, South Moravian, and Pilsen regions. For the first time, all regions of the Czech Republic are represented.

In addition to dozens of single-family homes, several large buildings are also part of the event. Among the most interesting ones that can be visited this year are the recently opened elementary art school of Karel Malich in Holice, or the Veronica Hostětín educational center in the White Carpathians, which is the oldest public building in passive standard in the Czech Republic. For the first time, interested parties will also be able to see several apartment buildings in Malešice and Hloubětín in Prague, as well as the first realization of a "mini" passive house with an area of 100 m2 in Ŕíčany near Prague.
Some of the locations will also host accompanying programs. Guided tours will also take place, for example, in the passive village in Koberovy, at the Otevřená zahrada educational center in Brno, or in several model apartments in passive apartment buildings in Prague. More information about the upcoming lectures and guided tours can be found here.
