Valašské Meziříčí (Vsetín) - The main building of the observatory in Valašské Meziříčí has begun renovations. Due to the reconstruction, the entire observatory area will remain closed to the public until August 9th. The building, which has been in operation since 1955, has only undergone minor adjustments in the past and its condition has deteriorated in recent years, informed CTK spokesperson for the city hall, Renata Votrubová. The repairs will cost 3.6 million crowns, mostly provided by the Zlín region. The observatory contributed 400,000 crowns towards the preparation of the construction. "The first stage of the reconstruction will involve the large glass area on the southern side of the entrance hall," stated the director of the observatory, Libor Lenža. The extension of the lecture hall will also be repaired, receiving new insulation and a roof. The main building will also have a new roof. The observatory regularly organizes weekend seminars focused on the latest in astronomy, provides astronomy clubs for youth and astronomy camps, various courses and exhibitions. It is also engaged in its own observational activities. The observatory area consists of an extensive garden with several buildings. The oldest is the reconstructed historic building of Ballner's observatory from 1929, which has been declared a cultural monument; part of it is now used as a small exhibition hall.
