Vysoké Mýto (Orlickoústecko) - People from Vysoké Mýto are complaining that the owner of the former brewery there is secretly demolishing the site, even though he is not allowed to. The Ministry of Culture started the process of declaring the brewery a cultural monument at the end of April, and the law prohibits any intervention in the buildings. The owner of the buildings, the Prague car dealerships Tom & Johny, refused to comment on the matter. This was reported today by Czech Television. The company Tom & Johny wants to build seven apartment buildings on the brewery site. According to locals, one building has recently been demolished on the premises, and roofs have disappeared from other structures. "I have this information that allegedly demolition is already underway. It must not be demolished," said Alena Bednářová from the Urban Planning Department of the Vysoké Mýto Municipal Office to Czech Television. Heritage conservationists now have 30 days to thoroughly investigate the brewery and possibly recommend to the Ministry of Culture to preserve the building. "Certainly, part of that structure has its value," said Jiří Junek, the director of the Vysoké Mýto Museum, to Czech Television. A local citizen initiated the proposal to declare the brewery, which dates back to the end of the 19th century, as a monument. The representative of the brewery owner, Zdeněk Vojnar, originally promised an interview on camera to Czech Television but later refused. The town attempted to acquire the brewery at an auction in 2000 but was unsuccessful.
