Volman Villa, a jewel of Czech functionalism, can be visited for free during the Architecture Day festival. Guided tours will take place on the first weekend of October, October 1-2, 2022. You will be introduced to the unique architecture of the villa, newly included in the prestigious international network of Iconic Houses.
The impressive villa was envisioned and realized by factory owner and patron Josef Volman in a sprawling park overlooking the romantic landscape of the Elbe River in Čelákovice near Prague. One of the most beautiful and expensive residences of the First Republic was designed for him in 1938-39 by young architects Karel Janů and Jiří Štursa. This monumental structure is an outstanding example of the style of living during the First Republic and showcases the best of Czech functionalism as well as the ideas of Le Corbusier, who undoubtedly inspired the architects. At the same time, it serves as a reminder of how fleeting dreams can be. A cultural monument of world significance fell victim to looting and vandalism and in the 1990s ended up as a crumbling object in a devastated park. However, a group of investors from Čelákovice decided to save the villa. The sensitive reconstruction, lasting more than 15 years, was designed and led by architect Marek Tichý and his team from the studio TaK Architects. Thanks to extraordinary dedication and costly private investment, the villa has been faithfully restored. The modernist icon of global significance has been reborn for the second time. “After a successful reconstruction, the final step remains, which is to make this previously hidden gem of Czech functionalism accessible to the public. We are bringing life back to the Volman Villa; we want to be a place where architecture meets experiences. The guided tours during the Architecture Day festival are the first opportunity to discover this exceptional building in person and with free entry,” says Zuzana Kadlečková from the Volman Villa.
The Volman Villa is also a recent member of Iconic Houses, a prestigious international network connecting architecturally significant homes and studios from the 20th century that are accessible to the public as museums. “The reconstruction of the Volman Villa is a powerful story, and I am pleased that this monumental building is already the eleventh Czech address on the world map of Iconic Houses,” says Natascha Drabbe, executive director and founder of the Iconic Houses network.
