The publication and the eponymous exhibition Into the Realm of Art Leads Many Gates presents the artistic work of Professor Jan Sedlák, the emeritus dean of FaVU, who would have turned 75 this year. The opening and launch of the publication by Jindřich Chatrný and Dagmar Černoušková, to which a number of domestic and foreign authors contributed, took place in the hall of the rectorate of VUT on Tuesday, April 16, 2019. Professor Sedlák focused his attention primarily on the period of Art Nouveau and architectural modernism, and in his publishing activities, he concentrated, for example, on the Tugendhat Villa and other famous villas. The exhibition showcasing his own artistic work will be on display in the rectorate hall until May 10, 2019.

Jan Sedlák considered himself a Sunday painter; however, he studied at the School of Applied Arts at a time when teachers such as Jan Brukner and Emanuel Ranný were working there. He returned to painting only before the mid-1980s and painted until around 2005. Over about twenty years, a significant number of oil paintings on canvas or sololite were created, which work with geometric flatness, striking colorfulness, and a formal transformation of reality. His work, even though it may not necessarily be perceived as innovative or progressive, contributes to the discussion about the development of modernist principles. After his military service in the mid-1960s, Jan Sedlák studied art history at the Faculty of Arts in Brno. He was the recipient of the City of Brno Award in the field of architecture for 1996, and in November 2015, he was awarded the Gold Medal at the Academic Assembly of VUT for his long-term significant scientific and pedagogical contribution. In 2014, he published, among other things, the book Memory of Buildings – Architecture of the Buildings of the Brno University of Technology.
