Krnov - In Krnov in the Bruntál region, the renovation of the listed sokolovna in Petrovická Street has begun. The sports hall was built ninety years ago according to a project by Krnov native, the prominent Viennese architect Leopold Bauer. The building will regain its original appearance. The removal of various extensions will also contribute to this. The work worth 51.5 million crowns will last until mid-2025. ČTK was informed of this today by the city spokesperson Dita Círová.

The city decided to carry out a complete renovation of the building, which has been significantly affected by later modifications, due to its poor technical condition. "The reconstruction will preserve the original purpose of the building as well as its basic layout and structure; later modern parts will be removed," said Pavel Andrle from the investment and asset management department.

The construction company plans to statically secure the building this year, start demolition work, and produce atypical elements such as wooden windows and doors. "Since the building is under heritage protection, we will invite representatives of heritage care to inspect the building and determine the necessary exploratory work. Their requirements will then be incorporated into the construction schedule," said the contractor's manager Jan Hojgr.

The modernist reinforced concrete sports hall has a rectangular floor plan, complemented by several outdoor terraces. It is topped with a gabled roof with dormers and high gables. It was built between 1932 and 1933 and was ceremoniously opened on November 19, 1933.

"The building features motifs inspired by the shape of a ship, including tubular railings, open staircases, and small windows in the rounded wall. The ground floor contains a small hall with facilities, while the upper floor features a large hall. The building is unique in that the vast majority of elements and construction details have been preserved in their original form. Whether it is the wooden glazed partitions, the metal side staircase, the cast terrazzo floors including the baseboards, the balcony mechanism in the roof, or the unique truss, whose base consists of a reinforced concrete structure combined with classic wooden elements," stated Círová. According to her, the authenticity is enhanced by the original gymnastic equipment integrated into the building, such as rings and climbing frames.
