Ladislav Machoň: Twin Villa of the Čapek Brothers, Prague-Vinohrady (1923-24)
Prague - Today marks the opening of the exhibition "A Visit to Karel Čapek," which showcases items from the villa of Karel Čapek, which was acquired by Prague 10. Some exhibits from the life and work of this playwright and writer are being displayed for the very first time. The exhibition at the Gallery Deset in Svatopluk Čech Square will run until October 19. The public will be able to view the villa itself for the first time in the spring of next year. A part of the twin villa that the Čapek brothers built was purchased by Prague 10 last fall from the heirs along with its inventory for 44 million crowns. According to the mayor of Prague 10, Bohumil Zoufalík, photographs taken by Čapek and letters that have not yet been published were found in the villa, among other items. "For this reason, the town hall decided to organize an exhibition in September of this year in the Gallery Deset where these newly discovered photographs will be presented to the public,” said Zoufalík. The villa is soon to undergo renovations. The Čapek brothers had the house in Vinohrady built between 1923 and 1924 according to the design of architect Ladislav Machoň. After their deaths, the house was inherited by relatives. Prague 10 purchased the monument after long negotiations last fall.
