The public prosecutor has charged four people in connection with the reconstruction of the Baroque complex of Kuks in the Trutnov region. According to the indictment, they ensured that a certain company won the tender. They face up to eight years in prison for arranging benefits during the public procurement process and damaging the financial interests of the European Union. According to investigators, the reconstruction of the building cost 322 million crowns, of which more than 314 million was funded by EU resources. This was stated today by the spokesperson for Prague police, Jan Daněk.
The case will be handled by the Municipal Court in Prague. According to spokesperson Markéta Puci, the court has already received the indictment, but a main hearing has not yet been scheduled.
According to Daněk, one of the accused, who worked for a state institution, provided information about the tender and the bidding conditions to another person, who then distributed it to the later winning company. The information was then used to create a competitive bid that won the tender. "In simple terms, the contract was tailored to a specific company, which then obtained it," explained Daněk.
As part of the Kuks - Pomegranate project, composed of several partial buildings, the Baroque hospital, which was begun by František Antonín Špork in 1692, was reconstructed. The reconstruction took two years, and the complex reopened to visitors in the spring of 2015. The garden was also repaired.
