Jihlava – The representatives of the Vysočina Region at today's last pre-election meeting supported the plan for a new multifunctional arena, which Jihlava is preparing to build in place of the old Horácký Winter Stadium. The council supported this plan with 38 votes. No one was against it, and one council member abstained from the vote.
In the adopted resolution, the representatives also acknowledged the possible contribution of the region to the financing of the arena, but did not address its specific amount. The representative from the opposition People's Party, Miroslav Houška, stated on behalf of his group that he could envision a subsidy from the region of 25 to 30 percent if the investment were around 800 million crowns. He also noted that this would be a matter for the next regional council.
According to Governor Jiří Běhounek (from ČSSD), a discussion on this matter will still be necessary. "There are a large number of questions that have not yet been evaluated," he said.
The civic democrat Zdeněk Geist abstained from the vote. In the debate, he noted that the costs of the arena are approaching one annual budget of the city of Jihlava. "I regret that the architectural contours are clearer than the financial ones," he said in the debate.
According to the President of the Senate, Miloš Vystrčil, who is also a regional representative of Vysočina for ODS, cooperation between the region and the regional city is important. "I see this as a very good step for future cooperation, which can involve areas other than just the multifunctional hall," he stated.
The arena is expected to provide facilities for cultural and social events in addition to sports. The completed study of the arena from the architectural studio Chybík+Krištof was presented to journalists by the city hall in June. David Beke (ODS), a city councilor and manager for the construction of the arena, mentioned during that occasion that the demolition of the old stadium should begin at the end of next year. The actual construction of the arena is expected to take two years.
