Petr Žert

"What is good and what is bad, tell people about that."

As if there wasn't enough sorrow. Valašské Meziříčí, December 25, 2011, architect Petr Žert passes away. Born in 1934 in Frýdek, he began studying geodesy at VŠB in Ostrava (1952-1955). He attended the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Brno University of Technology from 1955. He obtained his diploma in 1960 under the guidance of Professor Bedřich Rozehnal; three years after his sister Růžena Žertová graduated from the same studio.
He worked at Stavoprojekt, the State Design Institute of Commerce, the Commercial Project, and Food Project. Poor assessment reports forced him out of the centers of architectural activity. In 1969, he was expelled from the Union of Czechoslovak Architects. Between 1963-1990, with breaks while living abroad, he worked as an educator at the Secondary School of Civil Engineering in Valašské Meziříčí. His students from this time, architects Zdeněk Trefil and Kamil Mrva, could tell us more about his strong, charismatic personality.
Many of his designs never had a chance for realization (the hotel Štrbské Pleso with Petr Jasník from the 1960s, a funeral hall for Frýdlant for which he won first prize from the Union of Architects in 1967, the Department Store Prior for Přerov from 1971). Numerous smaller buildings, renovations, and interior adjustments for private builders occurred during this period. Since the mid-1970s, he has been intensely engaged in architectural issues in the countryside, in a purely agricultural environment. He continues to implement several extensive projects in the post-revolution years, serving as an advisor to the Minister of Agriculture in Slovakia. He designs groups of family houses, renovations of historical buildings, and continues to work for private clients. He co-founded the Chamber of Architects and is a member of the Block of Architects and Artists. He also teaches at Brno University of Technology.

A tall figure, curves of gestures inscribed in the plans of buildings, precision and weight of words, uncompromising, generous, a great man, Petr Žert.
