The Cabinet of Architecture and the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava cordially invite you to a meeting with Itah Heinze-Greenberg on the occasion of the launch of her book Erich Mendelsohn …from life/Biographical. The German art historian and writer, currently based at the renowned ETH Zurich, will present several remarkable episodes from the life of the famous architect, including the circumstances surrounding the creation of the Ostrava Bachner Department Store.

The culmination of the Monday meeting with the author will be a screening of the internationally awarded film by director Duki Dror “Incessant Visions of Erich Mendelsohn / Mendelsohn’s Incessant Visions” in its Czech premiere with Czech subtitles. This creative and rightly acclaimed tribute casts a clear light on the life of the German-Jewish expressionist architect Erich Mendelsohn. Visionary Mendelsohn, a contemporary of Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, created works that influenced generations of architects. The story is based on letters exchanged with a young beautiful woman, Louisa, who became his wife. Director Duki Dror breathed life into the correspondence of two passionate artists who supported each other in tumultuous and troubled times. Mendelsohn's career followed a similar path to that of many Jewish emigrants fleeing Nazism; he worked in England, Israel, and eventually the USA. Mendelsohn's drawings pulse with energy, and his buildings are stunning. One of his first constructions, the Einstein Tower, stands among the most important examples of modern architecture. Dror skillfully juxtaposes the architect's original sketches with contemporary footage as seen by architects and people who utilize these unique buildings today – testifying to Mendelsohn's integrity and the timelessness of his visionary designs.

According to the Haaretz newspaper, it is “An impressive artwork... that you must see!”

The individual parts of the Monday event will be connected by the unique Ostrava singer-songwriter Václav Fajfr.
The event is part of the international festival of architecture, design, and art ARCHIKULTURA 2014.
