On the first day of June, the third lecture and discussion from the spring cycle Dialogues on Architecture will take place at the café of the creative zone DEPO2015 in Plzeň. At the traditional time of 18:30, theorist and journalist Karolina Jirkalová and architect and educator Roman Brychta will present.
The introduction of Karolina Jirkalová, who has long been monitoring Czech architecture also as an editor of the magazine Art+Antiques, will include a brief presentation of her work: How did a graduated Czechist come to write about architecture? What criteria does she use to reflect on architecture? And why is architectural criticism a marginal genre in our country? A common theme of her symbolic and concrete dialogue with architect Roman Brychta will be public, or shared, communal space. And this in the broadest sense of the word – not only material, physical space but also mental space, an environment for exchanging ideas. This closely relates to the willingness and ability (not only) of architects to lead a dialogue, argue, write criticism, and also accept it, and above all, to engage in public issues. Jirkalová will also touch upon collaboration but also the mutual tension between theoreticians/critics of architecture and practicing architects.
As a practicing architect active in the academic world, Roman Brychta, founding member of the studio Projektil architekti and head of the Architecture IV studio at Prague's UMPRUM since 2011, will join the dialogue. The architectural office Projektil creates economical, welcoming, and fresh architecture that understands traditions, innovative typologies, and technologies. It promotes the integration of contemporary art, design, architecture, and the landscape and invites experienced and young promising creators to collaborate. For Roman Brychta, architecture is primarily about caring for the place where we live. At the beginning of his presentation, he will showcase library projects and emphasize that these buildings are also part of the public space (he also defines public space as shared space). According to Brychta, in the relatively closed environment of the country, an architect should not only design such a building as a quality house but also, through a "holistic" approach to common external and internal spaces, initiate a change in people's behavior and, thus, the whole society. After his presentation, visitors to the lecture will also be able to engage in a dialogue with him and Karolina Jirkalová.
