It does not forget about the program for the general public either.

Excluded social groups, unemployment, traffic congestion, too little or, on the other hand, too much greenery, diluted construction, passive citizens… Almost certainly one of these problems appears in the brief for the developers of spatial or strategic plans, which the studies should address. The reSITE festival and expert conference, taking place in the new Forum Karlín space in Prague in just a month, will offer countless opportunities to address the described phenomena on June 19 and 20. The organizers have managed to secure great speakers from around the world again, who will share their experiences not only at the conference but also during several parallel workshops.
The expert conference will again be supplemented by events for the general public. Not only Prague residents can look forward to exhibitions, a bike ride, lectures, or video mapping by the creative unit Lunchmeat. Two exhibitions at the festival center Forum Karlín will focus on urban planning and the future of cities. The exhibition titled Thinking City will showcase specific examples of transformation from ten global cities, including Paris, Lagos, London, São Paulo, Barcelona, and Bilbao. The second exhibition Who creates the city?, prepared by the Goethe Institute in collaboration with curators from the Deutsches Architekturzentrum Berlin, presents the winning urban projects from the Weltstadt program. More information about the festival and registration for the conference is available at www.resite.cz.
The reSITE festival organizers have also announced a photography competition for the most interesting photographs of exemplary solutions in public space or interesting details of the city, with the winner emerging from public voting through the reSITE Facebook page. Detailed competition rules can be found at http://buff.ly/RiezyA. Winners will receive free conference tickets and other interesting prizes.
The conference program is designed to appeal not only to developers and investors, architects and designers but also to representatives of municipalities – mayors, building office employees or development departments. BENEDETTA TAGLIABUE will come to speak about how revitalized public spaces can connect nearly an entire city. She is one of the few globally successful female architects, whose realization of the St. Catarina market in Barcelona is considered iconic from an urban planning perspective. A completely different recipe for a prosperous and functional city will be offered by VLADIMÍR LEDECKÝ, the mayor of Spišský Hrhovo, who has exemplary integrated the Roma community into the renewal and management of property, social, and cultural life. With such outcomes that people from the surrounding areas are moving to the city.
As usual, reSITE will not lack world stars of architecture and urbanism. Among the most prominent is ADRIAAN GEUZE – co-founder of the studio West 8, which is behind the stunning Borneo project in Amsterdam, a new urban district on water. Many know him also for the ongoing realization of the new Governor Island in New York, which will become a free natural park. The revitalization of another island – St. Patrick’s Island in Calgary – is managed by another speaker, the renowned architect MARK JOHNSON.
Over the course of the two days of the conference, which will be the first of its kind held in the new spaces of Forum Karlín, about thirty experienced and practicing experts will present to the audience more than a hundred specific implementations and procedures. “We know there's no time for theory. Our goal is for the seven hundred expected participants to take away tangible outputs, solutions, experiences on how to improve life in cities. There will be space not only within the conference but also during accompanying programs,” says Martin Barry, founder and director of reSITE, which over the past three years has become the most prestigious event focused on planning, architecture, landscaping, and environmental economics in Central Europe.
reSITE = reCEPT for a better future for cities reSITE will connect visitors for the second time with the visions of foreign and local personalities, showing what is possible in the world of urbanism. It will stir discussions among architects, politicians, urban planners, developers, landscape architects, ecologists, economists, scientists, students, and anyone interested in improving the quality of life in the city.
reSITE = reSPECTED speakers About forty world-renowned experts will share their experiences. Among the guests are stars such as Edward Glaeser, an economics professor at Harvard University and urban economics specialist, Michael Kimmelman, the exclusive architecture critic for The New York Times, Michel Desvigne - the most prominent landscape architect of today, Adriaan Geuze, founder of the world-renowned Dutch studio West 8, Sergei Kuznetsov, chief architect of Moscow, and former head of the transport department of New York, Margaret Newman. From the Czech Republic, attendees include Karel Schwarzenberg and Zdeněk Bakala, among others. reSITE = successfully reALIZED examples from abroad Involving civic initiatives in the development of a district in Berlin, converting industrial buildings in Canada, revitalizing a neighborhood in St. Louis, a project for protected housing in Madrid, or the redevelopment of Times Square - there are many themes that megacities like New York or London can share with Prague and smaller towns in the Czech Republic. reSITE is a platform for exchanging experiences, positive examples, and misguided attempts.
