The theme of the 14th year of the PROPAMÁTKY conference – the restoration and use of buildings will this time be water mills. It will provide answers to the question of what their historical development was like, but will focus primarily on their current state and the possibilities for new usage.

The conference will take place from November 13 to 15, 2024, at the Automatic Mills in Pardubice. Until 2013, they served to grind grain. After losing their original function, the area was gradually converted by the Smetana couple into a new urban district. Its life is co-participated by the regional Gočár Gallery, the City Gallery of Contemporary Art Gampa, the educational laboratory Sféra, and the Pardubice Information Center.

In the original grain silo, a multifunctional hall was built, in which the PROPAMÁTKY conference will take place.

On Wednesday, the event will kick off with a regionally themed evening, followed by the main conference day on Thursday. Then, on Friday, the popular trip associated with visits to interesting sites in Pardubice and its surroundings will be on the agenda. As every year, the meeting will be complemented by a rich accompanying program.

The conference will feature contributions on the historical development of water mills, their technology, and also the architecture of their buildings. We will also address industrial mills with alternative grinding drives. The focus of the program will then be the presentation of current possibilities for the restoration and new utilization of mill facilities, including thematic panel discussions and the presentation of specific successful examples from practice. The final program will be presented well in advance. Registration for the conference will open in June.

All current information about the conference can be followed on the CONFERENCE website

WHY IN PARDUBICE?
The PROPAMÁTKY conference has been held since 2008 in locations closely related to the chosen theme. We seek buildings that, apart from the necessary facilities, will also offer inspiration and showcase possibilities for the restoration and use of the structure. That is why the conference on water mills will take place in Pardubice. The Automatic Mills here are among the most significant buildings of this type in our country and currently represent a living whole of a converted complex.

HISTORY
The Bratři Winternitz Mills were built according to the architectural design of Josef Gočár in 1911. Their technical project and equipment were provided by the local machine shop of Josef Prokop Sons. After a fire in 1919, the mill was restored and expanded. An additional block of grain silos was built onto the original mill building, which was architecturally unified with the original structure. The building served its original purpose under new owners throughout the 20th century until its operation ceased in 2013.

PRESENT
In 2015, the Automatic Mills buildings were purchased by the Smetana couple. In the following years, the entire complex was transformed into a new urban district in collaboration with several architects, as well as the city of Pardubice and the Pardubice region. In 2023, the complex was opened to the public. In the former silo, a conference hall was established, where the PROPAMÁTKY conference will also take place.
