Biegel/Paris
At the beginning of the 20th century, Paris was described by some visitors as a "completed city," which gives the impression that it was all created at once during Napoleon III and his prefect Baron Haussmann. However, this impression is deceptive. Beneath the generous structure of the boulevards lies historic Paris, without which the "capital" of the 19th century would never have come into being. The apparent "completeness" of the city simultaneously led to plans and even some realizations in the 20th century that denied this form of the city and sought its fundamental change. The lecture will present the transformations of Paris in several chapters from historical beginnings to the present through a series of realized and unrealized projects. Its aim is to depict a vivid image of the city, whose form is the result of a dramatic struggle that continues even today.
The lecture opens the French series of discussions concerning urban issues and residential buildings entitled "Metamorphoses of Cities"

Catalyst
David Trottin from the French atelier Périphériques Architectes will speak about the role of architecture in shaping the city. The starting point of architectural design should be to stimulate the development of the urban environment and its aspects – intensity, density, mixing, and even randomness. These aspects represent the reality of design, which an architect works with. He sees architecture as a catalyst for living conditions in the city.

The civic association Kruh has been organizing public events and lectures focused on current developments in architecture since 2001. The goal of the lectures and discussions is to facilitate a dialogue about quality Czech and world architecture and architectural creation with broader layers of the public – i.e., even beyond a narrow circle of experts and architecture students. Kruh has already organized more than a hundred lectures by significant and emerging Czech and foreign architects and theorists of architecture, two film festivals on architecture, and the exhibition Profession: Architect. It regularly publishes compilations of texts on architecture. The civic association Kruh is also the initiator of the nationwide festival Architecture Day.
