noAarchitecten

The founders of the studio, An Fonteyne, Jitse van den Berg, and Philippe Viérin, are interested in the traditions of architecture, the potential that emerges from the intimately known and ordinary environment, and the possibilities that arise when transferring these ideas through construction and the use of materials. A walk through thoughts, sketches, projects, and buildings will illustrate the architects' intimate relationship with literature, visual arts, and politics.
From the beginning, the studio has focused on the construction of public buildings and emphasizes their sensitive integration into the historical centers of cities. Currently, it is working on an international project to transform 35,000 m2 of former Citroën garages into the cultural center Centre Pompidou in Brussels in collaboration with the studios Sergison Bates architects and EM2N.

BC architects & studies
The act of building is both an activity and a narrative. It is a complex endeavor for a suitable community to build its infrastructure, crossing social classes and skills, along with materials and technologies. This has a certain impact and expresses values and thoughts within a broad network around a specific project. The act of building involves the ability to change through action, narrative, and outcome.
We, the studio BC architects & studies, are convinced that if architecture is to have a positive impact on society, we must focus not only on designing its infrastructure but also on transforming the process of creating that infrastructure. We must experiment with the role each community member plays in the construction process. The precise definition of a professional architect is no longer sufficient for us; we engage in material production, contracting, storytelling, knowledge sharing, community organization – and all of this influences our approach to design.
