Xaveer de Geyter worked for 10 years as the lead architect at OMA, one of the most significant architects of our time Rem Koolhaas. Twenty years ago, he founded his own office, whose projects he will present in the June lecture organized by the KRUH association. He will be joined by Nu architectuuratelier, a Belgian studio focused on experimental architecture. The lecture, part of the Belgian Inspiration series, will take place on Thursday, June 6, 2019, at 7:30 PM at CAMP – IPR Prague. The spring lecture series dedicated to Belgian architecture will conclude with one of the most notable Flemish architects of our time. Xaveer De Geyter worked for 10 years as the lead architect in Rem Koolhaas's office. In 1988, he founded his own firm, XDGA, which currently employs more than 50 architects and works worldwide. His projects have been included in prestigious monographs such as El Croquis and have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award. In Prague, during his lecture titled "Give Space to Life," Xaveer De Geyter will discuss the importance of context in architecture, not only from a physical perspective (what surrounds the object) but primarily from cultural, social, and economic viewpoints. “The foundation of architecture in our way of working is to conduct a careful analysis of the context. This analysis brings new questions, opens unexplored areas, reveals hidden opportunities, or connects the incompatible,” says Xaveer de Geyter regarding the topic of his lecture. The XDGA office has received numerous awards both in Belgium and internationally. They have been nominated five times for the Mies van der Rohe Award, primarily for public buildings such as the Faculty of Economics and the university campus in Ghent or the European College in Bruges. Among Xaveer de Geyter's most famous projects is the Sint-Lucas art school in Ghent. “Xaveer De Geyter is one of the leading figures in contemporary Flemish architecture. His ten years of experience with Rem Koolhaas is reflected in his work, which is highly esteemed on the international stage. We are therefore very pleased that he accepted the invitation to Prague,” says Marcela Steinbachová, the founder of KRUH, about the speaker. The second studio to speak on June 6 at CAMP is Nu architectuuratelier. A studio founded by three partners: Armand Eeckels, Halewijn Lievens, and Arunas Arlauskas in Ghent, it focuses on experimental architecture. They are characterized by an informal approach to housing, such as the conversion of industrial buildings into residential units or the construction of homes that can flexibly adapt to the needs of their users. The studio was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award and the Belgian Award for Architecture with the C-mine Expeditie project, which is a reconstruction of an old mining complex that now serves as a cultural and educational park for children and adults, where exhibitions and artistic performances are regularly held. Nu architectuuratelier is the creator of the tallest tower in the complex, from which one can see the surrounding landscape as well as the entire former industrial site. The June lecture will take place on Thursday, June 6, at CAMP – IPR Prague. Tickets can be purchased via GoOut for 100 / 120 CZK, and the lecture will be in English. The goal of the lectures organized by the KRUH association is to convey foreign experiences to the Czech audience and to demonstrate that high-quality contemporary architecture can arise in a small country and manifest itself without unnecessary ostentation. Belgium is very close to the Czech Republic in this regard, and thus KRUH presents it as an inspiring example. “Belgian architecture has become very progressive since public competitions for quality designs began to be held in Belgium. Unestablished studios have also found space, and the quality of the built structures has increased dramatically. Nowadays, people travel to Belgium for architecture, as they used to travel to Switzerland or the Netherlands,” adds Marcela Steinbachová.
