We would like to invite you on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at 7:00 PM to the Tugendhat Villa for a lecture by Šárka Svobodová - Unwanted Inheritance: Jan Dvořák.
The work of Brno architect Jan Dvořák from the 1960s to the 1980s has not yet been comprehensively processed, even though he is the author of dozens of buildings not only in Brno but throughout Czechoslovakia. In several chapters, architectural historian Šárka Svobodová and former colleagues of architect Dvořák from the project institute of the Czech Union of Production Cooperatives will present his work.
The lecture is part of the accompanying program for the exhibition project UNWANTED INHERITANCE: ARCHITECT JAN DVOŘÁK (1925–1998), prepared by the Museum of the City of Brno in cooperation with 4AM/Forum for Architecture and Media. The personality of Jan Dvořák is presented in Brno until July 2, 2017, at three locations: the largest part at Špilberk Castle, a section titled REPLICATION at Tugendhat Villa, and the final part in the cultural space in Prague.
The relationship to architecture and art created during the previous regime is sought by a large part of the current middle generation of both lay and professional public with difficulty, architects included. However, Jan Dvořák himself exhibited this ability in his time. During the 1960s, he actively opposed inadequate interventions in the realizations of Brno's interwar architecture. His respect and undoubtedly admiration for interwar realizations is also reflected in his personal commitment to searching for the original furniture from the Tugendhat Villa designed by designer Lilly Reich and architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The original pieces of furniture and subsequently created replicas will become the central theme of the exhibition installation.
We recommend making a reservation for the lecture.
