The Žižkov TV Tower is one of the most prominent landmarks of the Czech metropolis. At the same time, it ranks among the most controversial buildings of domestic architecture in recent decades. The professional community and the general public are divided into two irreconcilable camps of admirers and opponents of the building. It seems that the Žižkov TV Tower does not leave the inhabitants of Prague indifferent. Should architecture like this be at its core? Should it evoke emotions, opinions, and disputes? What is the real story of the Žižkov Tower, which many of us may no longer know and can help us understand the significance of this building and the reactions it provokes? The premiere of the documentary film Žižkov Tower (CZ, 52 min) by director Olga Strusková presents the creation, realization, and subsequent public debate associated with the Prague monument, which has become one of the most important milestones of Czech modern architecture since its inception. After the screening of the documentary, there will be a discussion with the building's author, architect Václav Aulický, architect and architecture popularizer Adam Gebrian, and artist Vladimír 518. The debate will be moderated by Josef Vomáčka, cultural editor and collaborator with Czech Television.
Václav Aulický (*1944) is a professor of architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He has long been associated with the company Spojprojekt Praha. Besides the most famous building of his career, the Žižkov TV Tower, the tallest building in the capital city of Prague, he is the author of many other significant public building projects, such as the Automatic Telephone Exchange in Dejvice, the operational building of Czech Television in Kavčí hory, and administrative centers in Prague's Karlín. Adam Gebrian (*1979) is one of the most prominent architects and theorists of architecture from the young generation. He has collaborated with significant foreign architectural studios, where he completed long-term internships, e.g., with Dominique Perrault in Paris or in Rotterdam's Maxwan. From 2009 to 2011, he led an architecture studio at the Technical University in Liberec. He is a member of the editorial board of Era21 magazine and co-founder of the civic association Městské zásahy. He regularly publishes critical insights into contemporary architecture and urbanism in Czech media. Vladimír 518 (*1978) is one of the founders of the Czech artistic street art scene. In his artistic work, he focuses primarily on drawing comic work. He is also engaged in magazine and book illustration. He is a co-founding member of the cult hip-hop band PSH (Peneři strýčka Homeboye) and is involved in independent music projects. He deals with mapping Czech street art and the visual culture of public spaces. He is a co-author of the book Kmeny, reflecting the visual appearance of Czech subcultural movements.
The program is created in collaboration with the Czech Architecture Foundation (http://www.nca.info).
