Francisco Mangado: Architecture with the Left Hand

Thursday, November 13, 08 19:30h

Meet Factory, Ke Sklárně 15, Prague 5 - Smíchov

Francisco Mangado (born 1957) graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Navarra in 1981, and even then, his graduation project attracted attention. He received the Thesis Project award and simultaneously the second prize in the national student competition for thesis projects in architecture. From the outset of his professional career, this significant Spanish architect has combined theory and teaching with practice in his own studio in Pamplona (the capital of the Navarra region). In 1982, he began leading studio work for students at his home University of Navarra. From 1996–98, he was a visiting professor at the University of Arlington in Texas. Since 2001, he has begun post-graduate studies at Harvard University, where he has also been teaching since 2007. Meanwhile, he lectures at universities in Spain.
Francisco Mangado's work is characterized by strong modeling and bold abstract geometry, which respond to their surroundings. A pertinent example of this influence is the exhibition and conference center in Pamplona and the Zuesti sports club set in the rural environment of Navarra. Generously conceived are the architectural modifications of public spaces in Madrid (Filipa II Street) and Bordeaux (Pey - Berland Street). Mangado pays great attention to working with material structures, as can be observed in his realization of the Spanish pavilion for the international Expo in Zaragoza. An impressive column system made of terracotta surrounded by water surfaces is used here as the main motif.
Mangado has received numerous awards for architecture and urban planning, such as: the national urbanism award, first prize in the prestigious new architecture competition in Navarra (1989), the international Andrea Palladio prize (1991), and an award at the IV. biennial of Spanish architecture (1997). Also, his designs are increasingly successful in architectural competitions. In recent times, notable projects include the realized winning proposal for the stadium in Palencia (2005), the proposal for the conference center in Palma de Mallorca (2005), and for the Museum of Art in Asturias (2008).
