On Tuesday, December 12, 2017, a lecture by Professor Rostislav Švácha on the topic of Desacralization of Sokol Halls will take place in lecture hall A310 at the Faculty of Architecture of the VUT in Brno, Poříčí 5. The lecture is part of a studio assignment by Gale/Sládeček addressing the design of a new theater and Sokol hall in Uherské Hradiště. The lecture is open to the general public.
"The architecture of Sokol halls from the last third of the 19th century resembles temples, as if Sokol exercises also fulfilled the function of a sacred ritual. The temple-like nature of the first Sokol halls is well expressed in the rhetoric of their descriptions in contemporary print. However, in the 1920s, a turn occurs, and Sokol halls begin to resemble factories. The lecture will conclude with the question of whether this architectural transformation was also accompanied by a change in the ideological content of Sokol exercises."
