The investor, the company First Skyscraper, paid the purchase price of 55 million crowns for the high-rise building on Ostrčilova Street in Ostrava, as well as the adjoining land, in mid-June. The tallest building in Ostrava, constructed between 1965 and 1968, will be renovated according to the design of the renowned architect Eva Jiřičná. It will be transformed into a comfortable residential complex that meets all the demands of modern living. The actual construction work will begin at the end of this July and is expected to last approximately three years.
The latest deadline for the start of construction is July 23, 2026. "The complete modernization of the building will transform the original structure into a twenty-four-story building, featuring a total of 111 new residential units. Future residents can choose from layouts ranging from compact 1+kk to generous 4+kk, with floor areas of the individual apartments ranging from 30 to 203 m². Each apartment will automatically come with a separate cellar unit, and motorists will also have the option to purchase their own parking space in the adjoining parking garage. A prominent aesthetic element of the entire project will be the balconies adorned with greenery, which will be maintained by an integrated self-watering system. The renovations will not be limited to the building itself, but will also significantly transform its immediate surroundings, where a new park layout and a modern zone for leisure activities and relaxation will be created," outlined Ostrava's mayor Jan Dohnal, describing what the final result will look like.
The so-called Ostrava skyscraper was originally also a residential building. It later served as an office complex; however, due to poor technical condition, it has been unused since 2013. The building deteriorated for a long time, and its demolition was even considered. Its rescue through a major renovation will, among other things, also elevate Ostrava's "height supremacy" with this building. Once completed, it is expected to rise to approximately 73 meters.
The story of the renovation of the tallest building in Ostrava began complicatedly. Although Ostrava decided on the project's investor as early as 2022, the sale did not take place. The city had to repeat the sale offer a year later, in October. Two serious bidders expressed interest. In 2024, the Ostrava city council then signed a contract with the aforementioned company First Skyscraper. Despite the delays, this significant project was not put aside and the "Ostrava skyscraper" awaits its second life.
The redevelopment of the high-rise building on Ostrčilova Street is attracting considerable attention. Evidence of this is the fact that even today, before the "first shovel hits the ground," around two dozen residential units have already been reserved in the future residential complex.
