The reconstruction of certain types of buildings requires sensitive solutions that correspond with the historical significance of older developments. VELUX, often perceived solely as a supplier of solutions for modern buildings, offers options for illuminating attic spaces without compromising the historical character of the reconstructed buildings.
The first option is to brighten the attic space with roof windows in studio configurations, where it is advisable to minimize the distances between window frames.

Studio configurations - roof windows installed with the interior rafter EBY
This is a combination for tightly fitting VELUX roof windows side by side, where the distance between window frames is 18 mm. The maximum width of the assembly when using system flashing is 2,780 mm, maximum height 2,550 mm (this solution was used during the reconstruction of Hotel Thalia, Prague 1).

The assembly can be achieved by using a prefabricated interior rafter EBY and supplementary roof windows. Supplementary roof windows GIL/GIU can be combined with any roof window and can only be installed below a roof window. They are non-opening and equipped with safety glazing, so they can serve as a parapet.

Roof windows in standard configurations
Standard configurations of roof windows were used, for example, during the reconstruction of the theater in Riga. When using EDJ 2000 flashing (for profiled roofing)/ EDN 2000 (for flat roofing), the roof window is set 40 mm lower into the roof structure compared to standard installation, allowing for inconspicuous placement of windows into the roofing. By embedding the roof window into the roof structure in combination with integrated insulation, thermal-technical parameters of the window can be improved by up to 18%. The material and color of the flashing are identical to the material and color of the roof window cladding.

Small-sized roof windows
For buildings where only small-sized roof windows are suitable, VELUX offers the GGL roof window in a size of 600×600 mm in copper design, which is manufactured exclusively for the requirements of the Czech market. Another alternative is the mass-produced roof window in size C02 (550x780 mm), which represents a more economical solution for less exposed areas of the roof (this type of window was used in Hotel Besídka, Slavonice).

Light tubes

Use of light tubes in historical buildings - Futura Mill, Hungary (exterior view, interior view)

Light tubes are very often used in historical buildings. The frame placed in the roof aesthetically fits into the plane of the roof, and the light tube allows daylight to be brought deep into the layout. Light tubes were utilized in the renovation project of the mill into a scientific center (Futura Mill, Hungary), where their tubes were also exposed. Another example of lighting spaces using light tubes is the reconstruction of the post office building on the embankment in Karlovy Vary.

Roof windows with grids
A specific category is represented by the roof windows with grid ZGD, which were used, for example, during the reconstruction of a house in the square in Kadaň. A window size, for example, 134x160 cm, can subsequently be divided vertically into any number of fields using the grid.
