The education center for healthcare workers shines with the façade system Sidings in a completely new light. Over 40 years of intensive use have significantly marked the center. The original spaces were inadequate, and the technical background of the building was similarly lacking. Today, the renovated and rebuilt education center for healthcare workers is a patient that has been discharged completely healthy and can once again bring joy to its visitors. During the successful operation, which connected old and new materials, PREFA assisted.

PREFA has once again perfected the "dialog" between old and new and clad the complex façade of the Innsbruck education center with the PREFA Sidings façade system. "The reconstruction was a heart transplant," says architect Julia Fügenschuh from the architectural firm Fügenschuh and Hrdlovics about the challenges faced during the reconstruction, which took place while classes were in session and with a limited budget.

Anamnesis and therapy for the building
"The dilapidated building materials from the early 70s posed a challenge for builders and architects. The old concept breathed a dark, oppressive, and distressing atmosphere into the building. The building did not feel like an environment where quality services and dignified spaces for patient recovery could be provided," says architect Fügenschuh about the original state of the center. As therapy, the architects prescribed the old building a reconstruction to gain more space and light.

The announced competition anticipated that the design would also elevate the urban environment. The medicine that was prescribed for the building was the release of the old, narrow, and isolated spatial concept. "Now, a sunlit courtyard shines through from above, which was previously a labyrinthine passage, inviting from the street space of the Innrain area to the promenade by the River Inn. The partially public areas of the local school, such as the café, library, and lounge areas, also benefit significantly from this," says Hrdlovics.

Architects as plastic surgeons

The architects also had to demonstrate their cosmetic-surgical skills in the external appearance. The main requirements were primarily: resistance to external influences and maintenance-free operation, since the façade had to match the urban environment not only visually but also functionally. "Fortunately, we managed to advocate for an aluminum façade with the builders. We used light gray slats PREFA Sidings P.10, which look simply great. The slats have a matte surface, providing an exceptional effect of light and shadow," summarizes Fügenschuh. However, it was not without complications. “The rounding of the façade with a radius of about 1 meter required a change from the planned horizontal installation of Sidings slats to a vertical one,” says master roofer Leopold Dorer, who executed the entire façade. "The PREFA Sidings slats are flexible to use and process, which allowed the implementation of the façade to remain compliant with the project in terms of time and cost. When it comes to the PREFA system, there are almost no limits to how it can be handled." A side effect is also a significant optimization of the building's energy balance. "The non-contact ventilated façade construction is optimal protection against weather influences and at the same time provides the center with quality insulation."

PREFA for the environment

And there is something else that Harald Kronthaler, project developer at PREFA, emphasizes: "The environmental impact of the material used will become an increasingly important decision criterion for public project clients. And PREFA scores here. Aluminum is 100% recyclable. This saves 95% of energy in production compared to primary aluminum. It is also crucial that the quality of the material does not change with re-melting.”

Side by side
Alongside the adventure that this architectural challenge offered, the architects also found much in common with the visitors of the education center during the project. Healthcare and reconstruction require primarily two things: teamwork and team spirit. After all, the demands of students, teachers, and architects for the profession are the same.
