Brno - Brno has received a building permit for flood protection measures in the Trnitá phase, which includes the transformation of the embankment on the Svratka and Svitava rivers. The more than three-kilometer section runs from the embankment of the Přerov railway line in Komárov along the Svratka to the railway viaduct on Uhelná Street and along the Svitava to the road bridge on Hladíkova Street. The city architect's office (KAM) in Brno reported this on its website. Work is expected to begin next year and be completed by 2028.

Once completed, the city will receive nature-based flood protection measures that will protect approximately 180 hectares and around 5,370 residents from a hundred-year flood. "A spacious flood protection park will be created along the Svratka embankment with a meandering side channel featuring puddles that will help retain water at elevated levels and contribute to increased biodiversity. It will also include a new pedestrian footbridge connecting both banks. Under the Komárov Bridge on the Svitava, there will be a underpass for cyclists and pedestrians, and in the adjoining section of the embankment, new areas for recreation and sports will be added, including piers, a natural amphitheater, and a refreshment zone," the office stated.

Due to the scale and complexity of the construction, its commencement also depends on the timing of securing the necessary grant support. The KAM has not yet disclosed the costs. The current assumption is that work concerning the city districts of Brno-Center, Brno-South, and Černovice will take place between 2026 and 2028. However, the company should start demolishing the unfinished railway polyclinic in Štýřice this year, which will make way for the next phase of the measures.

Brno completed flood protection measures in the section from Riviera through Poříčí to the railway viaduct on Uhelná Street last summer. The project, costing 1.5 billion crowns excluding VAT, took three and a half years to complete and had its completion date postponed several times.
