Olomouc – One of the most well-known student clubs in Olomouc, the legendary U-club, is undergoing extensive reconstruction. Palacký University (UP) aims to return it to students for their use, providing a venue for bands, theater companies, associations, and community activities. The reconstruction of the club located in the college dormitory area near Envelopy, including new equipment, will cost 27 million crowns. The university has announced a tender for contractors, said Rector Michael Kohajda to reporters today. The club ceased to serve its purpose in 2018.
"Our intention is to return the club back into the hands of students. I personally remember it being a truly iconic place where there were concerts, social events, or where we would go to watch The Simpsons," said the rector. He pointed out that even the current generation of students is interested in the revival. "Some are already planning to reserve times so they can meet here," added Kohajda.
The new U-club will not just be a concert hall. The university plans to operate it under its own management as an open cultural and community center, which will offer space for student concerts, theater performances, debates, workshops, film screenings, student association activities, and other university events. According to UP management, students themselves should significantly help shape the program.
"We said that reopening this legendary space is a big challenge and at the same time a great opportunity. We want to host not only music events here, but we would also like the club to be multi-genre. It will be maximally adapted to that," added UP Vice-Rector Matěj Dostálek.
According to the rector, in addition to the stage and auditorium, there should be small tables for playing board games or chess tournaments. A large window could open the club to outdoor areas. The facilities of the building will be renovated, a new terrace connected to the dormitory area will be created, and the facade will be newly opened towards the university campus.
The U-club has functioned since the early 1980s as an important center of student and cultural life. Hundreds of Czech and foreign musicians have performed on its stage, and the club has become a meeting place for several generations of UP students and residents of Olomouc. At the beginning of 2018, it ceased to serve its original purpose and was used as a storage space or gym.
The design of the architectural solution for the new U-club was created by the creative studio Mimokolektiv. The university aims to open the new U-club in the summer semester, around the turn of February and March 2027.
