Brno – The ideas of Kateřina Šedá, a renowned visual artist and social architect, are helping to improve the so-called Brno Bronx. The neighborhood is located close to the city center but is considered one of the so-called excluded areas. Thanks to Šedá, selected places have received new decorations, and furniture and other innovations are being prepared.
The total costs for all three phases of the Brnox II project amount to more than 1.2 million crowns. Among the most visible results of the first two phases this year are black-and-white paintings on a shop in Hvězdová Street and on the railway bridge in Vlhká Street.
"At the Pohoda park, which will undergo revitalization, a wall has been repaired, and an interesting drawing has also been created on it," said the first deputy mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).
The third and final phase of the work was supported by the city with an amount of 490,703 crowns. The money will be used, for example, for painting canal covers, completing the painting in Vlhká Street, and decorating one house on Cejl.
"The artworks will receive a special protective anti-graffiti coating. Concrete furniture will be placed in public spaces, and after the fieldwork is completed, a mobile and web application will be launched," described Hladík. The city district of Brno-sever followed up the project with repairs to a small area at the corner of Bratislavská and Hvězdová Streets.
According to the Deputy Mayor Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates), the entire Brnox II project is a unique application of social architecture. "With it, we want to verify that the quality of public space positively influences the mindset of its residents and visitors. Kateřina Šedá, who has been the bearer of the main idea from the beginning, can wonderfully connect her works with the locality that she knows well," stated Koláčný.
The appearance of the Bronx will also be influenced by the City Gallery project, which is backed by writer Martin Reiner. The gable walls of the houses will be adorned with giant paintings, known as murals. The first one is currently being created on Cejl.
