Ostrava - The first part of the new Ostrava district Žofinka, which is to be built on the site of the former slag heap of the Žofinská foundry, will be developed according to a design by the Danish studio Adept. The initial phase of the project includes the construction of approximately 300 apartments. Construction is set to begin in the autumn of next year. Jana Kokešová conveyed this information on behalf of the investor.
The project for the new district, which is to rise on an unused brownfield between the city center, the Ostravice River, and the Lower Area of Vítkovice, is backed by Pod Žofinkou Holding. At the beginning of June, the results of an urban-architectural competition were announced, in which two designs succeeded. Further discussions were held with both winners, and ultimately the decision was made in favor of the Danish architecture and urban planning studio Adept, which submitted its design in collaboration with Czech partners ohboi, atelier.tečka, VEN.KU architekti, Vectura Pardubice, and Afry.
"Žofinka will become a new urban district that will serve not only today's Ostrava but also generations to come. It is not just about apartments – we want to create a place where people will have schools, jobs, greenery, and space for community life. The first phase above the Ostravice is the beginning of this transformation, for which we have chosen a partner who offers not only quality architecture but also a strong vision. The Adept studio impressed us with its ability to combine urban life with a natural environment," stated Tomáš Laštovka, a member of the board of Pod Žofinkou Holding.
According to co-founder of the Adept studio, Martin Laursen, the design draws from the traditional structure of European cities with an emphasis on human scale, where residential blocks with green courtyards clearly define squares, streets, and passages. "This will create a neighborhood for pedestrians and cyclists, full of greenery and natural light, with a new public school, sports hall, and recreational spaces for all generations at its center. This is how we envision the rebirth of Žofinka,” Laursen said.
The new district is expected to be developed over approximately 20 years. The brownfield Žofinka covers an area of about 20 hectares, with roughly 412,000 square meters intended for construction. The area is framed on two sides by railway tracks and on the third by the Ostravice River. The district will combine residential, administrative, and service functions, and will also include shops and a school.
The Danish architectural office Adept was founded in 2006 in Copenhagen. Last year, it also became the winner of an international architectural competition for the design of the Ostrava Towers Complex skyscraper, which is set to be built in the center of Ostrava.
