Washington – American President Donald Trump has issued an executive order mandating that all new federal government buildings must be constructed, whenever possible, in a style inspired by Greek and Roman architecture, similar to the White House or the Capitol, where Congress is seated. The Republican president has thus renewed his earlier battle against modernism and brutalism in governmental architecture. Today, American media are reporting on this.

Thursday's executive order titled "Make Federal Architecture Beautiful Again" builds on a similar order that Trump issued at the end of his previous term in the White House. It mandates that all new federal buildings in Washington be constructed in a classical style and that this and traditional styles across the country serve as a guide for construction.

However, the current order from the Republican president goes a step further by rejecting the principles for federal architecture from the 1960s, which dictated that the government should avoid "official styles" and let contemporary architects lead. The adoption of these principles led to the construction of a number of modernist buildings across the country, writes The Washington Post.

The order mandates the construction of government buildings in a manner that "uplifts and beautifies public spaces" and "evokes respect among the general public."

Trump has already begun to implement his aesthetic visions in the White House. For example, he has had the lawn in the Rose Garden paved, where he subsequently placed yellow-and-white striped umbrellas similar to those on the terrace at the president's Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, reports CNN's website. The president has also erected a pair of giant flagpoles on the White House lawn, from which American flags fly. Last but not least, he has ordered the construction of a ballroom for $200 million (4.2 billion CZK) in the White House, which is set to begin in September.
