Benešov - The former Tábor barracks in Benešov should be transformed in the future into a new urban district with apartments, a park, and sports facilities. The city took over the twenty-five-hectare area from the army this March. An architectural study of its transformation has already been prepared. However, the realization is being hindered by the old zoning plan. The new one is expected to be approved only in the spring of next year, said Mayor Petr Kouba to ČTK. Before the new zoning plan is approved, the reconstruction can be prepared architecturally. The task of developing the architectural study has been assigned to a new committee composed of representatives from the city council coalition and the opposition. It is an advisory body to the city council, to which it should present proposals for the use of the area. By acquiring the barracks, the city mainly gained land, which it has practically none of to date. According to the mayor, only a minimum of the buildings in the area can be utilized. For example, the Central Bohemian Region is interested in one of the buildings, which it would like to use to relocate the Podblanicko Museum. Some departments of the city hall or the municipal police could move into the former headquarters building. The transformation of the barracks is expected to take 20 to 25 years, according to the mayor. The city has had the area monitored against vandals, which will cost nearly a million crowns yearly. Until a decision is made about the fate of individual buildings, the city intends to lease them. One entrepreneur would like to build a sports shooting range there, for instance. In the back part of the area, there could temporarily be storage facilities or small manufacturing units. Last spring, the city also received the former Prague barracks free of charge from the army. It should also be transformed into a zone with apartments, a shopping center, and a square with plenty of greenery.
