Ústí nad Labem – A total of 15 international teams have enrolled in the international competition for the future appearance of the Milada Lake area near Ústí nad Labem. Czech experts are joined by authors from Spain, France, Sweden, the USA, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Britain. Applicants for participation in the competition could submit their applications until the end of July, which included a portfolio of reference works. This was reported today by Hana Volfová, spokesperson for the Ústí Coniferous Plant (PKÚ), which manages the water area.

"The competition concerns the landscape and urban planning solution for the interest area of Milada Lake, as well as setting the strategy for its development. This is a very complicated and complex task that must be addressed by teams composed of experts from various professions with experience in similar projects," said Karolína Koupalová on behalf of the competition organizer.

The expert jury is now evaluating based on the quality of the submitted works and the expertise of the competition team. Based on the criteria, the jury will select the six best candidates. "They will be invited to submit a proposal for the basic vision of the interest area of Milada Lake by the end of November in the first round of the competition. Subsequently, the jury will select the three best proposals, and their authors will prepare a more detailed concept of the addressed area by the end of March 2021," stated PKÚ director Walter Fiedler. He added that in the next round, the jury will choose a winner, with whom they will negotiate the conclusion of contracts for the elaboration of more detailed studies.

The lake was opened to the public five years ago and has since gained a large number of supporters among tourists, athletes, and nature lovers. The infrastructure is gradually being built by the state enterprise. The connections are expected to be completed next year.

The decision to halt mining near Chabařovice in Ústí was made in the 1990s. The filling of the lake, which covers an area of 250 hectares, began in 2001 and ended in 2010. The maximum depth of the lake is 24.7 meters.
