Ještěd in a Cage is a traditional student competition at the Faculty of Art and Architecture of the Technical University of Liberec, organized by its students. Each semester, a five-member jury is tasked with selecting the two best projects and four nominees from the fields of Architecture and Urbanism and Fine Arts. Ještěd in a Cage begins with an opening at the start of the week, and during the week, it is complemented by lectures, concerts, and workshops, which expand the event into the city center, thus gaining extracurricular relevance. The entire JfK week culminates in an evening featuring a ceremonial announcement followed by an afterparty. Before the official opening of the 27th edition, a lecture took place on Tuesday, February 9, at the Fryč bookstore and antique shop – Building Life Cycle: A Debate with an Architect and a Heritage Specialist, where a discussion moderated by FUA graduate Michaela Říhová featured Jaroslav Zeman from the National Heritage Institute Liberec and Jakub Adamec from the ANUK studio.
The official Wednesday opening returned to the tradition of a concert at Vokno. The renowned Liberec establishment welcomed the progressive punk band MMNK – Moths Have the Right to Cremation, all the way from distant Brno! The venue was packed, with attendees arriving both purposefully and spontaneously, but no one regretted it!
After the dance-filled Wednesday evening, we enjoyed a workshop titled Make Your Sled & Ride Down the Hill. Many movable and less movable sleds were created, and we then rode down the ski slope on Ještěd – and all in good health!
By Thursday, the jury arrived, composed of Rozálie Kašparová, Petra Kunarová, Richard Biegel, Michal Koleček, and Epos 257, who stayed at our new sponsor – the Hotel Praha.
The actual Friday announcement finally returned from Google Meet to the Studio of Karel Hubáček after two years!
The winner in architecture was Anna Machátová with her project Forest Columbarium for Riga, Latvia, and the winner in art is Václav Podestát with the installation Lightness.
The nominees include – in the architecture section Michaela Maštrlová with the project Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant and Matěj Tobiáš with Body of Breakage, and Filip Čapek with the project Milk/asphalt along with Vítězslav Plavec with Overcolored Landscape for the art section.
Congratulations!
After the announcement, the electronic experimental band 1flfsoap performed, followed by a move from the Studio of Karel Hubáček to the Had club for the afterparty, where Liberec DJ Olga Zhaldak played.
The return of Ještěd in a Cage to an offline environment has been very beneficial! Thank you all for your participation, and we look forward to seeing you again in Liberec in the summer!
