Prague - The architectural competition for the future form and use of the freight railway station in Prague's Žižkov district is a step closer to realization. In mid-February, the Prague 3 council will decide on its announcement in an extraordinary meeting. Experts and investors should participate in the meeting. In an interview with ČTK, Mayor Vladislava Hujová (TOP 09) stated this. According to long-term plans, the heritage-protected station is to become a cultural and educational center.
The city hall is negotiating the conditions of the competition with the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), which is to prepare the competition. "The competition will be entirely in the hands of experts to ensure continuity over several electoral terms," the mayor claims. According to her, there is also agreement with the owner, the company Žižkov station development, namely Czech Railways and Sekyra Group. The investor is expected to finance the urban planning competition, she said.
According to the materials prepared for the councilors, it is already clear that a school should be built on the premises. A tram line will lead to the building. "The Institute of Planning and Development has been invited to an extraordinary meeting taking place on February 16. The subject of the discussion will also include whether the competition for the Žižkov freight station will be announced and if so, in what format," confirmed spokesman Adam Švejda.
For several years now, there have been heated discussions about the fate of the functionalist building of the freight station. Representatives of the owner, developer, and city hall signed a memorandum nearly two years ago, agreeing on the future cultural use of the heritage-protected building. However, the conversion of the vast station building into a social and cultural center would cost around two billion crowns. There are plans for extensive development around it.
The building from the 1930s was considered by experts to be one of the most modern of its kind in Europe in both technological and architectural terms.
