As a result of 43 changes to the zoning plan of Prague, which were hastily and non-standardly adopted on August 5, 2008, by the City Council of Prague, there will be – after their approval by the council – the demolition of the Žižkov freight station in favor of a new boulevard that pleases the councilors of the third municipal district. The building, which perfectly fulfills the functionalist thesis of the house-machine and, due to its operational solution, likely represents a European unique case, is also the longest building in Prague. In recent years, more than two dozen school and professional studies have emerged regarding its new usage. It is not a protected monument.
“The proposed demolition of the Žižkov freight station represents not only a significant cultural loss due to its being an exceptional example of modern architecture. It signifies a fundamental misunderstanding of the opportunity offered by new uses for this unique industrial site in creating the future urban composition of Žižkov. Demolition justified by the need to create a 'new boulevard' in Žižkov seems rather like a pretext for seeking the simplest solution for the architect and developer, against whose banality the preservation of this industrial monument would indeed help protect.”
