Bratislava - In the Slovak competition for an artwork commemorating the victims of COVID-19, the design by Czech architect Radek Talaš won. This was announced by the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava (MIB). Artificial wave-making devices will be installed on seven piers around the Ružinovská lake in Bratislava, which visitors can activate by standing in a designated spot on the pier.
"The expert jury appreciated the winner for bringing a timeless idea of a sensitive intervention into the existing natural environment," stated MIB in its press release. "The winning design builds on the project to revitalize Ružinovská lake from the Live Places program, which was one of the key conditions of the competition brief," they added, noting that 40 proposals were submitted to the competition.
In Slovakia alone, more than 20,000 people have succumbed to COVID-19. Among the other victims are also individuals who did not receive timely treatment for other diagnoses due to the crippled healthcare system, according to MIB. For this reason, they believe there is a natural need for Slovakia to have a memorial site where the bereaved can symbolically remember their loved ones and friends.
The idea of creating a memorial for the victims of COVID-19 in Slovakia was brought forth by the civic association Real Victims, which helps the bereaved. "The pandemic has divided us, affected friendships, families, relationships, and has torn society apart. Our great effort is to reunite what the pandemic has divided," said Lenka Straková from the civic association. "We are pleased with the high participation; many proposals have been submitted to the competition, which is a signal for us that society does not want to forget COVID-19 and its victims so easily," she added.
The maximum costs for the memorial are to be 160,000 euros excluding VAT (almost four million CZK) and its implementation will be funded through donations and contributions. The actual realization of the artwork is closely linked to the revitalization of the area around Ružinovská lake. The project documentation, which will determine the detailed financial and timeline plan, is expected to be finalized next year.
