Písek - Písek has announced a competition for an urban solution for the area of the former Žižkov barracks, where, among other things, a sports hall is planned to be built in the future. This concerns an area of approximately nine hectares. Last year, Písek revitalized part of the area where dilapidated houses stood by removing approximately 50 tons of debris from the premises. Competitors must submit their proposals for the new design of the complex by August 22, after which the city leadership will select the winner. This was reported by the spokesperson of the Písek town hall, Irena Malotová.

"We want the site of the former barracks to finally come to life after many long years and to naturally connect with the urban residential space," said Deputy Mayor Josef Knot (TOP 09). The city acquired the building from a private investor who originally planned residential construction there. However, he withdrew from that intention.

"Once we managed to get the land back into the city's ownership, it was necessary to take care of it. The dilapidated military buildings were demolished last year, and in the autumn, the area was completely cleared. Announcing the competition is another necessary step towards the development of the whole area. We are pleased that one of the members of the proposal assessment committee is also architect Josef Pleskot,” Knot added.

The area of the former Žižkov barracks is divided into several parts. In one of them, a technological center was established some time ago, and there is also a new psychiatric hospital located here. "The northern part is still the subject of a legal dispute between the city and the Žižkov center company regarding the validity of the lease agreement,” said Václav Filip from the Písek Department of Investments and Development. He added that even if the city does not succeed in the dispute, the contract ends in June 2019.
