Prague - Prague will announce a tender with an estimated value of about 59.5 million crowns including VAT for the reconstruction of the swimming pool in Motol, during which a new, significantly larger facility with a restaurant, sauna, and wellness area is to be created, replacing the current buildings. The city councilors approved the public procurement today. Local residents criticize the plan, claiming it is unnecessarily oversized. Construction is set to begin this year, and the city aims to have it completed by spring next year.
The swimming pool is located near the Motol ponds between Plzeňská and Zahradníčková streets. The city already has a building permit for the project, but it has stalled due to criticism from local residents, including from the neighborhood association Homolka - Motol. The Prague 5 city hall also had comments regarding the scope of the planned construction.
According to a document approved today, the construction is to be carried out within the originally planned scope. The current auxiliary buildings are, according to the city hall, in a state of disrepair and do not meet the existing standards. The new two-story building will complement the current concept of the swimming pool with additional activities allowing for year-round operation, as stated in the rationale for the resolution.
The lower floor will continue to serve the swimming pool's purposes, with showers, changing rooms, toilets, and refreshments. On the second floor, the city plans a café, wellness facilities, and the upper part of the restaurant. The architecture of the building is inspired by water and maritime themes. "Year-round operation of the facility will also be ensured by the fact that the closed area will not be demolished every winter by non-compliant groups of residents and will not be regularly vandalized," the document also states.
