Buildings of the Moravian-Silesian Region 2008 are known

Ostrava - The highest Grand Prix award in the Moravian-Silesian Region Building 2008 competition was awarded to the Klimkovice Tunnel on the D47 motorway. The work by the construction company Subterra also received the main award in the category of Transport, Engineering, and Water Management Structures. The public favored the reconstruction of the villa into the headquarters of FEBE TRADE in Ostrava-Muglinov by the architectural studio Platforma Ostrava.
The winners of the third year of the regional competition were ceremoniously announced today at the Antonín Dvořák Theatre in Ostrava. Architects, designers, and builders submitted 35 new constructions and renovated buildings, which were completed and certified last year and the year before.
The awarded tunnel, located on the motorway section between Ostrava and Bílovec in the Nový Jičín region, is the only motorway tunnel on the D47. Since last May, drivers have been passing through two separate two-lane tubes that measure over a kilometer in length. The tunnel runs through a quiet area, protecting the adjacent Hýlov spa from motorway traffic.
In addition to transport, engineering, and water management structures, a ten-member jury also selected from 18 civic amenities buildings. The main award went to the new construction of the Park Inn Ostrava hotel by the Ostrava architectural office OSA projekt.
In this category, the general public found its winner, most frequently voting for the new headquarters of FEBE TRADE by Ostrava architect David Průša and scenographer Radomír Otýpka. The 31-year-old Průša also took home the main prize in the category of Industrial Buildings, where he won for his new service for MAN Truck Center in Ostrava-Přívoz.
In the Family Houses category, the symbolic gold is shared by a family house in Havířov-Dolní Datyně, designed by young Ostrava architects Kateřina Holenková and David Kotek from the PROJEKTSTUDIO EUCZ studio, and a family house in Opava-Kylešovice by Opava architects Tomáš Bindr and Jan Zelinka from Atelier 38. The Opava Atelier 38 also won in the Apartment Buildings category with a development in Ostrava-Poruba. The 36-year-old Bindr also received a special award from the expert jury for a project titled Family House Osoblažsko.
This year, for the second time, an unconventional thesis project was awarded. The dean's award from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the VŠB-TU Ostrava was given to Jiří Labudek, who worked on the topic Apartment Building - Trombe Wall.
In determining the winners, the expert jury assessed the overall architectural expression of the building and its integration into the surroundings. The quality of construction work, appropriate use of materials, originality, the social purpose of the building, and its impact on the environment were also important, stated the jury chairman Milan Balabán.
Last year, the highest Gran Prix award was received by the Roman Catholic Church in Ostrava-Zábřeh, designed by Brno architect Marek Štěpán. The Church of the Holy Spirit also received the main award in the Civic Amenities Structures category, where it shared first place with the renovation of the railway building in Ostrava-Svinov. In the first year of the competition, the highest award went to the auditorium and information technology center at VŠB-TU in Ostrava-Poruba.
