Tišnov - The leadership of Tišnov in the Brno area is preparing a brief for an architectural competition that is expected to yield the winning design for the future appearance of Míru square. It will be announced in September. The goal is to transform the large area in the city center into a pleasant place for people to gather and possibly host smaller cultural events, providing enough shade on hot days and reducing the disruption caused by traffic compared to now, said Deputy Mayor Karel Souček (ODS) to ČTK. If preparations go well, construction could begin in 2022.
"We want to calm the traffic in the square and parking will be resolved anew. The historically protected fountain will remain, and in light of climate change, we want to include trees and plenty of greenery in the square to make it pleasant. One of the ideas is to place a small amphitheater in the square, where smaller cultural events could take place," said Souček.
Proposals from architectural firms will be evaluated by a commission made up of experts and city representatives in the first half of next year. "Then, it will take about a year and a half for project preparation," Souček noted.
Transforming the square into a more pleasant space for the citizens of the ten-thousand-strong town has been one of the goals of the current mayor Jiří Dospíšil (MOST) since he first took office five years ago. On the sloping square stands a neo-Renaissance town hall building, close to which is the Gothic Church of St. Wenceslaus. There is also a nearly 100-year-old functionalist building currently serving Komerční banka, and the post office building dates back to the pre-war era.
