The Czech Chamber of Architects has announced the 3rd edition of the Czech Architecture Award. The competition is open to architectural realizations built in the territory of the Czech Republic in the last five years. Architects can submit their works until March 31, 2018. Traditionally, the prestige of the Czech Architecture Award is supported by a prestigious seven-member international jury, as well as an expert academy. The significance of the Czech Architecture Award also lies in year-round and regional promotion of architecture. Applications will again be submitted via an online form and do not carry any costs for the participating architects. The results will be announced at a festive gala evening, which will take place in November 2018.

The results will be decided by an international expert jury, which will select approximately 50 nominated works for the shortlist by the end of May 2018. From this number, the jury will then choose about 5 to 10 works to be awarded the honorable title Finalist of the Czech Architecture Award, from which the jury will select the main award winner. There will also be awards for exceptional achievement, selected by the Academy and the Council of the Czech Chamber of Architects, as well as partner awards, whose laureates are proposed by the award partners.

International Expert Jury

The work of Czech architects will traditionally be judged by seven esteemed foreign experts. A member of the international expert jury for 2018 is the renowned Austrian architect Carlo Baumschlager, who works at the architectural office Baumschlager Hutter Partners, which has
a commendable number of extraordinary realizations for which it has received prestigious awards. Another juror is architect Zsolt Gunther, who is among the most prominent Hungarian architects with numerous realizations not only in his homeland but also in Scandinavia, for example. Neighboring Slovakia will be represented by architect Andrea Klimko, whose work has long transcended the borders of her homeland; she is the director of the architectural office Andrea Klimko Architects located in London, Vienna, and Bratislava. The diverse composition of the jury is also enriched by Polish architect Robert Konieczny. Since the beginning of his practice, he has collected an exceptional number of various awards; ten times his realizations have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award - the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. The area of landscape architecture, among others, is represented in the jury by Yael Moria Klain from Israel, who is internationally recognized as a landscape architect and urban planner, but also as an exceptional curator. The Czech Republic in the jury is represented by Ivan Reimann, working in Germany. With his architectural office, he successfully participates in numerous architectural competitions and also works in the academic field. Germany is also represented by architect Roger Riewe, whose respected architectural office has branches not only in his native country but also in Austria and Poland. In addition to designing buildings, he also engages in urban planning and the development of education and research
and is a well-known academic.

The Academy of the Czech Architecture Award

As a very significant institution, the Academy of the Czech Architecture Award has proven to be in the executed editions of the award. It includes more than 300 Czech architects, theorists, or journalists, including finalists from previous editions of the Czech Architecture Award. The role of the Academy lies in actively seeking works that have not yet been submitted, in addition to those submitted by the authors themselves, and alerting the organizers to them. This step covers the maximum range of domestic architectural production for the given period.
The Academy is also responsible for nominations for exceptional achievements in architecture.

Who can apply for the Czech Architecture Award?

In 2018, authors can submit their works realized in the territory of the Czech Republic in the last five years to the competition showcase. This includes buildings constructed from January 2013 to December 2017. Works that have made it to the shortlist in last year's and the year before's editions are excluded from applying for the competition. The Czech Chamber of Architects continues to offer free registration for the competition. The CCA hopes that this step will especially facilitate access for young architects and emerging studios, for whom a registration fee could pose a significant barrier to presenting their works, as well as discovering new and creative creators. Architects can submit their realizations via a simple online form. The electronic record of buildings also eliminates any potential costs for the competing architects related to printing panels, etc. For 2018, the Czech Chamber is also preparing, as in the previous edition, regional events connected with the presentation of the finalists of 2017 as well as future nominated works for 2018.
