On Thursday, March 13, 2014, the results of the student competition exhibition Second Skin were announced at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague. The exhibition was opened and awards were presented to the authors of the best residential buildings by the dean of the Faculty of Architecture CTU, Prof. Ladislav Lábus. 30 nominated student projects developed in the winter semester of the academic year 2013-2014 showcase different approaches to designing buildings for living. For the third year, the exhibition contributes to the reflection on studio teaching and discussions about the methodology of designing residential buildings at the FA CTU.

Marek Pertlíček: Inner Periphery of Prague, Interrupted City - 1st Prize

The house I dream of should be something like my second skin. It should stretch when I am in a good mood and bend over me when I am not doing well,” Thomas Schröder. The motto of the competition exhibition captures the goals of the subject ATBS - Atelier Residential Buildings, which introduces students in the third semester to residential issues in the broadest sense. Students' attention is focused on defining external and internal relationships of the object, the stability of the environment, the structure of the object, or the use of basic materials.

The project is assigned in the studios of FA CTU as a task with a clear residential program in a specific location and urban context. The interpretation of the given theme is left to the heads of the studios. Therefore, the competition exhibition features both family and apartment buildings in urban gaps, as well as tower apartment buildings or an experimental apartment building for the Island of Art.

The jury, composed of Markéta Cajthamlová, Jakub Fišer, Pavla Kordovská, Karel Mrázek, and Jaroslav Wertig, was impressed by a holistic approach, cultivated layout solutions, and the search for a refined spatial structure. The winner of Second Skin is Marek Pertlíček (Aulík Studio) with the project The Inner Periphery of Prague - Interrupted City. The jury appreciated the comprehensive solution, which works holistically with context, scale, and modern form, and highlighted the succinct expression set within the original structure of Záběhlice. The second place went to the project Housing by the Radbůza by Veronika Landová (Mádr Studio), which was positively evaluated by the jury for its clean, simple, and functional layouts, and calm unpretentious façade design, and praised the graphic presentation. Third place was taken by Adam Kolovratník (Cikán Studio), whose project City by the River - an apartment building with a gallery and café unusually combines residential and public space functions within an apartment building.

From our 'outside' perspective, it might seem that the residential building project is introduced in the curriculum too early. That for a comprehensive approach to design and for responsibly addressing all aspects of this typology, second-year students still lack certain experience. However, that is not the case – it is rather a pity that many of them will not return to this topic during their studies. Therefore, besides the competition participants, we would like to express our appreciation to those who continuously teach this subject in their studios and continue to introduce it for upcoming years beyond ATBS.”, stated the chairman of the jury Jakub Fišer in the final report.

In the history of architecture, the family house has been a central theme for many prominent architects and a manifestation of new architectural theories. Even today, family and apartment buildings are one of the most common typologies, and mastering this is one of the foundations of architectural craftsmanship. How second-year students dealt with “apartment buildings” from the first concept to the final presentation in their studio projects is showcased in an exhibition in the atrium of the Faculty of Architecture CTU in Prague's Dejvice until March 31, 2014.
