The exhibition is extended until July 26, 2009 House of Art – Jurečkova 9, 702 00 Ostrava
Based on the positive evaluation of IFY (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations based in Stuttgart), which was contributed to by curators Prof. Dr. Regina Stephen and Dr. Ita Heinze-Greenberg, it has been possible to negotiate the extension of the exhibition Erich Mendelsohn. Dynamics and Function. The Vision of a Cosmopolitan Architect until July 26, 2009. The Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava has achieved considerable success in negotiating the extension of this world-renowned exhibition, which celebrates its premiere in the Czech Republic and will not be displayed here again in the near future, given the packed calendar of IFY and the touring schedule of the Erich Mendelsohn exhibition. The showcase of architectural gems has already traveled through the Academy of Arts in Berlin (2004), the National Gallery in Ljubljana (2006), the Royal Institute of Irish Architecture in Dublin (2006), the School of Art in Glasgow (2006-2007), and the Museum of Estonian Architecture in Tallinn (2009). Now, Ostrava – House of Art and the Czech Republic have been added to this list of significant European institutions. Future destinations will take the exhibition to Yerevan in Armenia. However, Ostrava leads the list of cities where the exhibition has been displayed. The Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava has managed to organize the largest global showcase of Erich Mendelsohn's architectural designs, which consists of 23 models and 111 panels with photographs, accompanying texts, and designs. Thus, Ostrava has become an important point on the map of European culture, not only because it has succeeded in showcasing the Bachner department store, the only building by Erich Mendelsohn in the Czech Republic. Moreover, the Bachner department store ranks among the three most significant works of world architecture on our territory (alongside the Villa Müller in Prague and the Tugendhat Villa in Brno). The architectural showcase of Erich Mendelsohn's works also supports the legitimacy of the city of Ostrava's candidacy for European Capital of Culture. After the exhibitions Conflicts of Vision / Facets of Modernity at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries / 1890-1918 and International Czech and Slovak Art of the 1960s, the exhibition Erich Mendelsohn. Dynamics and Function. The Vision of a Cosmopolitan Architect (the best that European architecture has brought to the world) is the third most significant event at the House of Art this year.
