Prague - A traveling exhibition that opens today in Prague presents the history, demanding reconstruction, and current state of the functionalist Tugendhat villa in Brno. It is taking place at the Studijní a dokumentační centrum Norbertov in Střešovice, established by the Museum of the Capital City of Prague. It will run until January 28 and will be accessible every Tuesday, Thursday, and on weekends from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The exhibition entitled Villa Tugendhat 1928-2013 showcases the tumultuous history of this unique house from its inception through recent renovation to its current status and operations. Informational panels documenting individual time periods are complemented by large-format photographs that illustrate the atmosphere of the Tugendhat villa through details of designer furniture, materials, and iconically known parts of the house, such as the chrome cladding of a column in the interior or the view through the strip window into the villa's garden. The exhibition also includes a model of the house at a scale of one to fifty.
The exhibition, which was created in 2012, was prepared by the Studijní a dokumentační centrum of the Tugendhat villa of the Museum of the City of Brno, which manages the villa. It has so far been seen by people in 25 locations both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
The Tugendhat villa, today listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, was designed in 1928 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Greta and Fritz Tugendhat. It is unique for its construction, spatial arrangement, interior furnishings, technical background, and integration into nature. For the first time in the history of architecture, a steel structural frame was used in the construction of a private house.
From 2010 to 2012, it underwent renovation aimed at bringing the building as close as possible to its original design. Since March 2012, the villa has been open to the public again and is visited by around 30,000 people each year.
