The new owner of London's Battersea announced on April 4, 2007, that they have chosen a new chief architect for the reconstruction of this former power station. At the turn of 2006, it was purchased for a sum of 400 million by the Irish real estate company REO, which brought in New York architect Rafaela Viñoly. Its previous owner, the company Parkview led by the Hong Kong family Hwang, acquired it in 1993 for just 10 million pounds. Until now, the plans of Cecil Balmond and his AGU from the Arup office had been followed. Among the other offices involved in various projects were Nicholas Grimshaw and the Dutch office UN Studio.
For many years, it was said of Parkview that they were more interested in land development than in saving the power station. During the thirteen years that Battersea belonged to them, Parkview did nothing to save the ruins of the power station. The new owner announced that they do not intend to continue with Parkview's projects since "they were not optimized for the potential market." Former architects will be replaced by Viñoly, Foster, and SOM, whose plans have yet to be published.
The planned demolition of the main feature of the building - the four corner chimneys - has not yet been ruled out, as the permit for their demolition is still valid. Link>
