New York - The Egyptian pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, and the Great Wall of China will today shine with blue lights to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. More than two hundred buildings around the world will light up this way. In the Czech Republic, Brno joins the celebrations.
The world commemorates October 24 as the day in 1945 when the UN Charter came into force, establishing the global international community. "Even seven decades after its inception, the United Nations remains a light of hope for all humanity. Every day, the UN provides food for the hungry and shelter for those who have been displaced from their homes," stated the organization's Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Among the first to experience the blue light were Australians gazing at the iconic Sydney Opera House. Throughout the day, sites include the rock temples in the Jordanian city of Petra, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Spanish Alhambra, and New York's Empire State Building, progressively adding from east to west.
In the Czech Republic, the facade of the Janáček Theatre in Brno and the adjacent square with the fountain will illuminate in the late afternoon and evening, where an exhibition celebrating the 70th anniversary of the UN was ceremonially opened on Friday.
