Expansion of the museum in Rotterdam by MVRDV

Rotterdam's museum Boijmans van Beuningen announced this month that its facilities will be expanding. The project is entrusted to the local office MVRDV, which came up with the idea of building an enlarged "picture frame". This best corresponds to the function of the new building. Due to the high groundwater levels in the Netherlands, the storage spaces will be located at the top of the frame structure, while the parking lot lies underground. The enormous reinforced concrete structure looks from a distance like an oversized table placed in the museum park. This way, the park could retain its open character while the museum gained the necessary storage areas and parking.
